Structural assessment

Are cracks in my villa walls dangerous?

Many cracks are cosmetic, such as fine plaster cracks. Cracks that are wide, diagonal, growing, or appear in beams, columns or slabs can be structural and should be assessed by an engineer. We inspect and report; the repairs are done by a contractor.

The short answer

Hairline cracks in plaster often come from shrinkage or temperature changes. Warning signs include cracks wider than a few millimetres, diagonal cracks from window or door corners, cracks that keep growing, doors and windows that start sticking, or cracks in structural elements. An engineer's assessment finds the cause and recommends the repair.
