Structural calculations

Do I need structural calculations for a roof water tank?

A full water tank is heavy, so the roof slab and supports should be checked by an engineer before adding or enlarging one. Where the works change the structure or add a new support frame, the calculations are also part of the approval.

The short answer

Water weighs about one tonne per cubic metre, so even a modest tank puts a concentrated load on the roof. Our engineers check the slab, beams and the tank support, and design a frame or plinth that spreads the load if needed. Whether a NOC or permit is required depends on the community and the works.
